How to Make a Solar Panel

Solar Panel Materials

Start by gathering your solar panel materials. You’ll need a ruler and pencil, a circular saw, a drill, screwdriver, silicone caulk, 3/8″ plywood, 1×1″ wood, solar cells, a soldering gun and solder, copper wire, glue, a blocking diode, plexiglass and outdoor paint for your completed project.

How to Make a Solar Panel

Step 1: Start by using the pencil and ruler to sketch a grid onto your plywood so you’ll know the placement of your solar cells. Each panel will have solar cells of varying sizes and number.

Step 2: To make a base for your panel, cut your plywood according to the grid you drew with your circular saw.

Step 3: To make the panel frame, use the circular saw to cut the 1×1″ wood into the right lengths and attach to the plywood with caulking and screws.

Step 4: It’s a good idea to paint your finished frame with outdoor paint.

Step 5: Create a series of cells by soldering the tabs in place. The tabs from the back of one solar cell will go onto the back of the next cell in line. Be careful: these tabs are very easy to break!

Step 6: Next, attach your solar cells to the base of the panel based on your grid with the glue.

Step 7: Attach the copper wire from the electrical system and the blocking diode. The diode works by keeping the batteries from discharging into the cells.

Step 8: Put the plexiglass in place over the top and seal it with caulk.

The materials will range in price but you can buy most of them online and save hundreds or thousands over the cost of a commercial model, just by learning how to make a solar panel at home!
